2021 Groundhog Day Activities Cancelled

At the January 12th Borough Council Meeting, the Borough was informed by the Union Kanaal Grundsau Lodsch No. 17 (Groundhog Lodge Number 17 on the Union Canal) that the 2021 Groundhog Day Festivities have been regretfully cancelled due to challenges that have arisen as a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Every year on February 2nd, Myerstown's favorite groundhog "Uni" is placed on a raft for a ceremonial ride down the Tulpehocken Creek.  After his ride, he makes his weather prediction for the next six weeks.

Since 1981, the Union Kanaal Grundsau Lodsch No. 17 has hosted the ceremony, which is performed in both English and the Pennsylvania Dutch language.  This annual tradition is held at the Myerstown Recreation Area on South College Street.

The Union Kanaal Grundsau Lodsch No. 17 hopes to return to its regular Groundhog Day Festivities in 2022.
